Botanical Name: Althaea officinalis

Family Name: Malvaceae

Therapeutic Uses: Marshmallow is a very demulcent herb that is great for hydration. A cold infusion of marshmallow root or leaves will slightly thicken water helping it to stick around in your body a bit longer. This gives your body time to distribute the hydration to your cells. So, if you feel like you keep drinking and drinking water trying to hydrate and you just keep peeing it out, marshmallow will help. Also makes a great compress for dry skin or dry rashes.

Cautions: Due to its demulcent nature (thickening), infuse marshmallow with plenty of water. It may interfere with absorption of some medications so it’s best to take marshmallow at least an hour before or an hour after taking the medication.
