Botanical Name: Urtica dioica

Family Name: Urticaceae

Therapeutic Uses: Nettle is a highly nutritive herb full of vitamins and minerals. It can be made into a tea and is best done as a long infusion. I like to place nettle leaves in a big cup with a strainer and a lid, pour boiling water over it, put the lid on, and leave it overnight. The long extraction will pull out more of the nutrients, some of which come out better in hot water and some in room temperature water. Leaving it overnight lets me extract all of the goodness.

I also use the herb in my Super Nutritious Herb Blend that I put on almost everything. It is a great herb to cook with as it doesn’t have a particularly strong flavor on its own, so it just adds a big boost of nutrients to everything I cook.

Cautions: Nettle is a diuretic and can be quite drying. Whereas prescription diuretics often deplete vitamins and minerals, nettle will help you get rid of excess fluids in the body and leave you with lots of vitamins and minerals.
