Botanical Name: Hypericum perforatum
Family Name: Hypericaceae
Therapeutic Uses: St. John’s Wort is an excellent herb for wound healing. It helps speed up the process and helps prevent scarring. It also helps repair damaged nerve tissue. Many people work with St. John’s Wort for depression. In Western medicine, “depression” is typically a catch-all term treated with catch-all antidepressants, but in herbalism, we prefer to work with specific issues and symptoms. I take a St. John’s Wort tincture every day to help quiet the voices in my head. Not in a “the voices told me to murder my husband” kind of way. For me, it’s that mean girl who lives in my head and tells me that I’m stupid and worthless. St. John’s Wort just makes her shut up or at least, makes her much, much quieter.
Cautions: Can cause sensitivity to light in some, though this has primarily been associated with hypericin–concentrated “standardized” supplements, not with herbal uses. Not to be taken with certain medications, including those requiring specific consistent concentrations over time –e.g. thyroid hormone, HIV immunotherapies, organ–transplant immunosuppressants, and psychiatric medications.
